Illegal

For years they were there, but not really there. Drifting, staying with relatives, or taken in temporarily by a relief organization. Illegals have occupied the unknown backstage of our society. At the most turning up in newspaper articles about illegal labor, miserable living conditions and criminality, or as the subject of election rhetoric.
Recently their existence has been acknowledged: The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) has made an attempt to record their numbers. A conclusive calculation could not be given, but CBS estimates the number at somewhere between 46,000 and 116,000. A few faces from among the many thousands come into the spotlight with the help of photographer Ruben Timman's camera.
